A cruise to the South Pole is one of those once-in-a-lifetime kind of experiences that one would be well advised to have prepared for extensively. Apart from warm clothes, most people have no idea what else they should park during their tour. Below is a comprehensive list of the most important things to carry along during your Antarctica Adventure.
1. Clothing - Antarctica is a long way to go and most ships advice that you only carry a maximum of 50 pounds. You will therefore need to prioritize on clothes. You will carry; waterproof/breathable shell jacket, waterproof/breathable shell pants, warm hat that covers your ears and waterproof, insulated boots. If you still have some room left, you can add several other clothes - all of which should be warm.
2. Accessories and Gear - Of course you will need such gear as snorkeling gear, skiing gear, binoculars, cameras and extra memory cards, bathing suits, medication, wildlife guide etc.
3. Other Additional Items - You will need formal dinner clothes for wearing during parties at the ship. You will also need a plastic bag that will help you transport the things that you do not want to get wet.
4. Means of getting Back home - Even the best prepared tour can go awry. If there is one thing that the Titanic tragedy taught us is that there is no ship that is accident prone. If you can afford one, make sure you have a satellite phone with you. If this not possible, you can join other friends on the ship in getting one.
5. Special Medication - You should always carry an extra amount of your special medication. Note that there will be a doctor and a medical center in the ship, but it may not have your specialized medication. The best thing is to have your doctor liaise with the doctor on the ship so that he can advise on your medication routine
