10 interesting facts about the Pyramids of Giza

For 3,800 years, The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man-made building on the face of the earth. We have to give credit to the Egyptian architects that nobody was smart enough to come up with a building taller than their king's tomb for more than 3 millenniums. The fact that they had done it is still a mystery - even today, with all the modern technologies, nobody can quite build anything like that. Below are a few interesting facts about the Pyramid of Giza.

1. The Great Pyramid of Giza is attributed to Pharaoh Khufu who had it built for a period of 20 years at around 2560 BCE. Amazingly, the only statue that has been discovered of the great ruler is 3-inch high.

2. The Pyramid was built with 2,300,000 building blocks, weighing an average of 2.5 tons each, others 16 tones. It has a base of 755 feet (230.4 meters) and rises to about 451 feet (138 m).

3. Rumors say that the pyramid was built on slave labor. This is discounted by the writings on the pyramid walls which show that Khufu's nephew, Hemiunu was the head of the projects and spent quite a sum for rations of the skilled workers that worked on the pyramid.

4. Don't ask me how they managed this, but the interior of the pyramid has temperatures comparative to those of the earth at 20 degrees Celsius - about 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

5. The three pyramids of Giza: Pyramid of Menkaure, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Great Pyramid of Khufu; are all aligned with the Orion Constellation.

6. The outer structure is made of 144,000 casing stones which are flat and have a margin error of 1/100th of an inch.

7. The ball and socket construction at the base of the pyramid has the capacity to absorb shocks from earthquakes and heat expansion.

8. The outer casing was made with polished limestone that made the pyramid shine like a jewel. Unfortunately in the 14th century, the earth quake shook lose the polished limestone which was then used by the Moslems to build mosques.

9. The pyramid is accurately aligned to the magnetic north and is said to be the only structure in the world that is correctly aligned to the north with a margin of error of 3/60th of a degree. The error, it is said, is due to the fact that the north point moves with time.

10. The four faces of the pyramid are slightly concave-shaped.

The Egyptians are pretty proud of this structure - and why not - their ancestors made what would later become the basis of modern architecture. In fact, there are some people who want to discredit the Egyptians as the foremost authority in architectural designs by saying that the pyramid was made by aliens. This is not true. You need to visit the pyramid to see the greatness for yourself.
